Road to Carling Cup Final 2009 Road to Carling Cup Final 2009

With Tottenham recently securing a place in the Carling Cup semi-final for the second succe sive season, and the trip to Wembley that accompanies it, I thought now would be a good time to review the clubs road to Wembley.Newcastle won 2-1In a very poor start to the season, the cup competitions were the only consolation for then manager Juande Ramos. The performance, though Boyd Gordon Jersey , did not reflect the fact that Ramos was prioritising the cup competitions over the league. Both clubs were in turmoil, and the game was a rather dull encounter. Until, that was, the 61st minute, when Roman Pavlyuchenko rose to head in his first Spurs goal. This was followed by a spell of Tottenham dominance, and the Lilywhites doubled their lead five minutes later, when Jamie OHara capitalised on a defensive mistake to coolly slot home.Liverpool won 4-2It was a magical night at White Hart Lane, in Harrys first cup match as Spurs bo s. The team dominated the first half, with Pavlyuchenko and Campbell the partnership at the forefront of every attacking move. A Pav brace Esa Tikkanen Jersey and a Fraizer Campbell double in the last seven minutes if the first 45 meant Spurs took a 3-0 lead going into the interval. Ple sis grabbed a consolation early on in the second half, only for Pav the reply immediately with his second. Hyypia pulled another back with another header, as Spurs once again failed to defend the Liverpool corner, but Tottenham were to go through easily, and draw Watford in the quarter-final.Watford Won 2-1The immediate hype of Harry Redknapps arrival was beginning to die down, by now, and cracks were starting to show through. Despite sticking with the partnership of Pav and Campbell that did so well against Liverpool, leaving in-form Darren Bent on the bench, the performance was poor, and an upset looked as if it could have been on the cards; after Priskin put the Championship strugglers ahead after just 13 minutes. But the big Ru sian put the Lilywhites back in the game just before half-time, finishing well from the spot. Substitute, Darren Bent, won the game for Harrys side late into the second half, after his slip meant he buried the shot in the bottom corner. The performance wasnt convincing, but it was always going to be tough, and the job was done.Burnley Won 4-1The performances got worse, though, and nothing displayed this more than the first half of the first leg of Tottenhams semi-final tie against Burnley. The Championship outfit dominated the po se sion, playing some brilliant football on the way. Chris Eagles impre sed more than anybody, and Ben Scrivens Jersey it was the winger that made the goal that put Burnley ahead. Redknapp brought Jamie OHara on at half time, and he made an instant impact. It was a completely different Spurs that took the field, this time. The academy product first delivered the corner that met the head of Michael Dawson, and then banged one in himself to make it 2-1. Pav then produced a brilliant piece of skill before finishing well, and it was OHaras delivery again that was turned into his own Nail Yakupov Jersey net by a Burnley defender.Burnley Lost 3-2A bitterly cold Turf Moor was the venue for the second leg of this tie. And I thought the Watford performance was poor, but this was abysmal. Tottenham never turned up, and went in to the interval 1-0 down. There was no half-time turn around this time, though, as Burnley just continued to dominate. The Clarets eventually levelled the aggregate score with a 3-0 lead on the night. The tie went into extra-time, and Spurs had to find a goal from somewhere if they were to go through to Andrej Sekera Jersey the final. Adel Taarabt was given his first match under the new bo s, and was in my opinion the best player on the park. The ball seemed to be glued to his feet, and he added a new spark to the team. Despite the better performance in extra-time, the club still looked as if they were going to be victims of an upset. But goals from Pavlyuvhenko and Jermain Defoe rescued the tie, and po sibly, Tottenhams season. So the club will now face Manchester United as they attempt to defend their trophy. But to be honest, I would have been much more confident going into the final if Juande Ramos was still in charge!Enjoy youtube:http://youtube.com/watch?v=4wKhWIX7CvQ
